Present Tense

The present tense in Ukrainian is equivalent to both the present tense and the present progressive tense in English. я працюю can mean [I work] or [I am working].

Verbs can be conjugated in the present tense according to the tables below.

For verbs ending with the -ати suffix:

читати - to read

Я Читаю I read
ти Читаєш you (informal) read
він / вона Читає he / she reads
ми Читаємо we read
ви читаєте you (formal) read
вони читають they read

For verbs ending with the -ити suffix:

робити - to do

Я роблю I do
ти робиш you (informal) do
він / вона робить he / she does
ми робимо we do
ви робите you (formal) do
вони роблять they do

For verbs ending with the -вати suffix:

працювати - to work

Я працюю I work
ти працюєш you (informal) work
він / вона працює he / she works
ми працюємо we work
ви працюєте you (formal) work
вони працюють they work

Examples:

- Що ти робиш?
- What are you doing?
- Я читаю книгу.
- I am reading a book.

- Ти студент?
- Are you a student?
- Ні, я працюю.
- No, I work.
