Past Tense

The past tense is very simple to form in Ukrainian. You simply remove the suffix of the verb and replace it with an ending corresponding to the gender of the subject.

For verbs ending with the -ати suffix:

читати - to read
For men For women
Я читав Я читала
ти читав ти читала
він читав він читала
For groups
ми читали
ви читали
вони читали

For verbs ending with the -ити suffix:

робити - to do
For men For women
Я робив Я робила
ти робив ти робила
він робив він робила
For groups
ми робили
ви робили
вони робили

For verbs ending with the -вати suffix:

працювати - to work
For men For women
Я працював Я працювала
ти працював ти працювала
він працював він працювала
For groups
ми працювали
ви працювали
вони працювали

Examples:

- Що ти робив на вихідних? (spoken to a man)
- What did you do over the weekend?

- Я їздив в Карпати! (spoken by a man)
- I went to the Carpathians!

- Що ти робила на вихідних? (spoken to a woman)
- What did you do over the weekend?

- Я читала книгу. (spoken by a woman)
- I read a book.
