"Plagiarists" at Adidas
Mexico has accused Adidas of copying the design of traditional huarache sandals. The new model was created by designer Willy Chavarría, but locals from the village of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag say no one asked for their permission.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said that this is the collective property of the community and that compensation must be paid for its use. People is demanding that Adidas remove the shoes from sale, publicly acknowledge the original designers, and respect the culture.
Goverment plan to file an official complaint to ban the sale of these sandals in Mexico. Adidas has agreed to talk with representatives of the local community. In Mexico, traditional crafts provide jobs for many people, so traditional clothing and footwear should be protected from copying.
